Healthcare Environmental & Housekeeping Idea Guides

August 8, 2012 | By
Each year, healthcare facilities throughout the United States take the opportunity provided by National Healthcare Food Service Week and honor their food service employees. The week started in Illinois in 1985 and became an official national celebration when declared by Congress in 1989. Celebrations such as National Healthcare Food Service Week foster teamwork, lead to improved workplace performance, and enhance job satisfaction. Positive Promotions’ catalog of unique yet affordable gifts was designed with this in mind. The gifts, coupled with the ideas presented here, will add impact to your message of appreciation for your dietary and food service staff.

60 Minutes Of Fame

Put the spotlight on individual members of your food services staff by giving them the focused attention they deserve. Celebrate one of the staff members each day or hour by declaring “Beth Jones Day (Hour),” etc. Announce the staff member’s name on the public address system and provide some information or a story about the person’s background, personality, years of service and accomplishments. Present the staff member with one of the items from the Food & Nutrition Services Deluxe Gift-A-Day Pack.

Majority Rules

Allow your employees some choice in their gifts. Pick six items out of this catalog that would fit in your celebration budget, such as “Dietary Services: Endless Possibilities” Cell Phone Pouch/Wallets and SoupMugs With Spoons. Cut out the picture and description of each, not including the price. Glue down your cut outs onto a sheet of paper. Make color copies and hang around your department. Ask everyone to vote for his or her favorite item, explaining that you’ll order the item that receives the most votes. So there’s an element of surprise left, don’t announce the results.

On Location

Assist your dietary staff members in becoming more familiar with areas of your facility that they rarely or never visit. Begin by obtaining Mr. Potato Head toys, one for each person. Hide all of the arms in one room, all of the eyes in another room, etc. Start off your employees with only the potato bodies. Pass out clues describing the rooms that have parts hidden in them. Participants must find the locations and a Mr. Potato Head piece in each. Award a “Dietary Services: Endless Possibilities” Fleece Blanket to the first person to assemble a complete potato head. Use “Dietary Services: Endless Possibilities” Retractable Badge Holders to thank everyone.

Winning Ways

Every employee can be a winner if you create customized award categories. Choose the Most Dependable, Hardest Working, Most Helpful, and Least Likely To Call In Sick, or other traits that fit your food services staff members. Just make sure you don’t leave anyone out. Announce the winners at an event held in the style of awards shows. Have department heads present the awards. As each employee gives a short acceptance speech, reward him or her with a “Food & Nutrition Services: A Recipe For Excellence” Cooler Bag or Laguna Tote Bag.
